Elasticity of OPEC supply to oil prices using quarterly data of
1980:1-2002:04 is estimated at -0.41 which confirms the
hypothesis of OPEC being considered as “revenue oriented” or
being faced with ©“ backward bending” supply curve. The Non-
OPEC elasticity oil prices with the same time series data is
estimated as 0.006 which is in contrast to OPEC. Although the
positive elasticity is very low, it confirms the commercial or
competitive behavior of Non-OPEC.
Regarding the low and high oil prices, it is clear that OPEC
follows the “revenue-target” behavior and in both price bands
OPEC faces “backward bending” supply curve. It is worthy to
mention that, comply with the higher elasticity of OPEC prices,
leads to this idea that OPEC could easily accept change of the
level of oil supply. But in the low prices situation since OPEC
seeks to meet the revenue-targets it is reluctant to decrease oil
supply. Therefore OPEC behavior is Asymmetric in high and
low Price bands,
