ن میزند و در«غم غربت شایستگی» به سر میبرد... لیووا به طرز ناگهانی وارد رمان میشود و مدتی مدید را با خالق خود به بحث و گفتگو میپردازد...مسئله اساسی برای قهرمان داستان مسئله فرهنگ و کشور و به دست آوردن دوباره زندگی است... لیووا تز ادبیاتش را مهیا میکند و در یک موسسهء خواب زده-خانهء پوشکین- که برای بزرگداشت نبوغ والای ادبیات ملی بنیان نهاده شده بود اما اینک بوی نا گرفته است،مقالاتی مینویسد.این خانه بر اثر تندباد حادثه به کلی در هم ریخته است...و به گفته آندره بیتف«اگر همین حالا از ما میپرسیدند که رمان چه چیزی را به نمایش میگذارد،بی آنکه دست پاچه شویم،بی درنگ و با اطمینان جواب میدادیم:انحراف را»...انسان چگونه خود را بازیابد وقتی که«از کودکی در جوی عاری از نشانه و دلیل و سرشار از وقایع گنگ و کور...شکل گرفته است؟». لیووا در سرزمینی بیگانه با خویش که همواره سرزمین لمانتف و گوگول است سرگردان میشود.هر کتابی که مییابد میخواند،اما اندوهش را پایانی نیست... لیووا سرانجام مرگی همانند مرگ پوشکین را نصیب میبرد.او در یک مبارزه تن به تن(دوئل)که در درون موزهء ادبیات روس-خانهء پوشکین-در میگیرد توسط یک رفیق پرولتر-چهرهء دیگر روسیه-با تپانچه پوشکین از پای در میآید... آندره بیتف میکوشد در این اثر که خود از آن به عنوان«رمان-موزه»یاد میکند سرنوشت روسیه و فرهنگ روس را از خلاص موضوعی به عمد طنزآمیز بازسازی کند و در نهایت نشان میدهد که تنها حقیقت کلمات و جانهاست که به حساب میآید... متن زیر ترجمه گفتگوئی است که چندی پیش به هنگام سفر نویسنده به پاریس به مناسبت انتشار ترجمه کتاب به زبان فرانسه با وی انجام شده است:

-چطور شد که کتاب را در ایالات متحده چاپ کردید و خود را آنهمه به خطر انداختید؟ در اتحاد شوروی،برای شما،در دورهای که کله شقها را وادار به مهاجرت میکردند چه اتفاقی افتاد؟ اصولا،من خودم را در حال مبارزه نمی بینم،بلکه به سرنوشت باور دارم:من هیچوقت نخواستهام سر و صدای زیادی برای کتاب به راه بیندازم.
(به تصویر صفحه مراجعه شود) کتاب در حال حاضر بسیاری از تأثیرات آنی خود را از دست داده است:اگر امکانش بود که در سالهای 07 به چاپ برسد،موجب یک ضربهء اجتماعی شده بود،در صورتی که حالا بیشتر یک حادثهء ادبی است.
برای اولین بار در این دو سالهء اخیر چیزی را احساس کردهام که قبلا توجهی به آن نداشتم:من هیچوقت برای تمام کردن کتابهایم عجله به خرج نمیدادم،زیرا هیچکس مرا برای انجام آن در فشار نمیگذاشت و من میدانستم که احتمالا همیشه میتوانم به سر وقتشان بروم."
