"به عبارت دیگر، مسئله این است که اگر هلاخا و اخلاق یهودی، هر دو اصیل و معتبرند، آیا میتوان یکی از آنها را مقدم بر دیگری دانست؟ و اگر این گونه نیست، در هنگام تعارض این دو، تکلیف چه خواهد بود؟ و اگر میگویید که آنها هیچگاه در تعارض با یکدیگر واقع نمیشوند، سؤال این است که پس تفاوتشان در چیست؟ مشکل دیگر این است که اگر اخلاق دینی خاصی فراتر و بالاتر از هلاخا وجود دارد، پس رابطه این نوع اخلاق با قانون مدنی غیردینی یهودیت چگونه است؟ وظیفه یهودیان در مورد تحمیل یا ارائه این اخلاق به غیریهودیان چیست؟ اشکالات دیگری نیز مطرح میگردد؛ مثل اینکه اگر قرار باشد اخلاقیات را همه مردم جهان بپذیرند، در این صورت بر اخلاق یهودی است که نه تنها اصولی جامع و دربرگیرنده همه مردم جهان داشته باشد، بلکه برای همگان نیز دردسترس و قابل استفاده باشد.
در اینجا نیز هیچ متن مستقل و مجزایی که به صورت صریح و آشکار، موضوعات اخلاقی را مورد بررسی قرار داده باشد، وجود ندارد و اخلاق به عنوان بخش خاصی از اندیشه و تفکر که باید مستقل از موضوعات دیگر به آن نگریسته شود، به رسمیت شناخته نشده است.
این موضوع عبارت است از اینکه چگونه بر انسان لازم است تا با انجام فرامین الهی، خویشتن را پاک گرداند و در راه خداوند قدم گذارد؟ حاخامها با وضع مجموعهای وسیع و مفصل از قوانین برای مهار تمام جنبههای رفتارهای آدمی، به این پرسش پاسخ دادند و نام آن را که دربرگیرنده موضوعات اخلاقی است، هر چند تنها محدود به آنها نمیشود، هلاخا (4) گذاردند."
