ویتگنشتاین، به عنوان نمونهای از شرح و تفسیر دینی گمراهکننده، به شأن تاریخی روایتهای انجیل اشاره میکند و مینویسد: خدا وامیدارد که چهار شخص حیات پسر متجسدش [= عیسی مسیح] را بازگویند، هر یک به شیوهای متفاوت و همراه با ناسازگاریهایی ـ اما آیا نمیتوانیم بگوییم: مهم این است که این روایت چیزی نباشد جز روایتی که به نحوی کاملا عادی دارای اعتبار تاریخی است، درست به این جهت که چیز ضروری و سرنوشتساز تلقی نشود؟ تا به ظاهر(16) [روایت[ بیش از آنچه میسزد اعتقاد نورزند و باطن(17) [روایت [حقش اداء شود.
اگر این تصویر تصویری خوب و دیندارانه باشد برای کسی چنین است که در مرتبهای یکسره متفاوت قرار دارد و باید از آن تصویر در زندگی خود به شیوهای استفاده کند کاملا متفاوت با آنچه برای من امکانپذیر است )CV, p.
این چیزی است که فیلسوف دین باید خاطرنشان کند؛ بدینمعنا که ما، در مقام بررسی واکنشهایی که نسبت به باورهای دینی نشان داده میشود، نمیتوانیم آنها را به صورتی شسته و رفته تقسیم کنیم به واکنشها نسبت به باورهایی که آنها را از لحاظ معنوی مؤثر میبینیم، و واکنشها نسبت به باورهایی که آنها را خرافهآمیز یا آشفته مییابیم."
