رسالت اصلی این کتاب، پاسخگویی به حملاتی است که علیه لیبرالیسم حداقل از زمان انقلاب فرانسه در فرهنگ سیاسی غرب، مطرح شده است.به عقیده نویسنده.متفکران ضد لیبرال به جذب و بازتولید گفتاری اقدام کردهاند که تأمل در ریشههای تاریخی و تبعات منطقی آن غفلت ورزیدهاند.البته ستایش آنها از مفهوم جامعه و اجتماع.مترادف با دولتگرایی، پیروی از یک رهبر و یا تعقیب مخالفان سیاسی برای نابودی آنها نیست.
