Abstract Homelessness as one of the social issues in Iran can be studied in different ways. Meanwhile, the issue of sex among homeless people, despite its importance, remains ignored. The purpose of this study was to examine the way in which emotional and sexual interactions are organized in the lived experience of homeless people. The approach of this study was qualitative and grounded theory. In-depth interviews were conducted with 42 homeless people including 23 men and 19 women. The samples were purposefully selected from the homeless hangouts in the two cities of Mashhad and Tehran. From Mashhad, Ismail Abad, Nodeh, Shahid Rajaee townhouses and from Tehran, Molavi, Farahzad, Harandi and some other examples have been studied. The data were initially analyzed using Maxqda software. The results indicate that financial needs to supply drugs as well as instinctual needs have led to sexual relations between homeless people. The target society of study generally promote their emotional and sexual interactions in a chaotic fashion. Based on the results, the gradual discrediting of the family institution and the turnaround of drugs to gain sexual pleasure have played an important role in this turmoil. In fact, regardless of the unique experiences that each homeless individual has had in their pre-cardboard sleeping life, the limitation of their social interactions to cardboard sleeper ghettos and the dense spatial proximity that prevails in these realms leads to the rapid spread and internalization of various abnormalities, including in the area of relationships and sexual issues.
A group of homeless men, with the waning of sexual desires (due to long-term drug use), turn only to emotional relationships with homeless women and sometimes masturbation.

Although sex is considered a biological need, almost all homeless people, in describing their experiences, link sexual relationships more or less to drug use.
