In Sunni sources, the manner of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain( and his companions has been a subject of attention; thus, the report of the heartbreaking event of Karbala and the captivity of the Ahl al-Bayt( family in Kufa and Sham expressed in historical sources, signifies the oppression and calamity of Imam Hussain( and the martyrs of Karbala.
Yazid ordered the governor of Medina to first take allegiance from the people of Medina, and contrary to his father's will, he demanded allegiance from those four mentioned individuals: «فخذ الحسین بن علی و عبد الرحمن بن أبی بكر و عبد الله بن الزبیر و عبد الله بن عمر بن الخطاب أخذا عنیفا لیست فیه رخصة، فمن أبی علیك منهم فاضرب عنقه و ابعث إلیّ برأسه»; "Take allegiance from Hussain ibn Ali(, Abdullah ibn Umar, Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, and Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr; if they pledge allegiance to me willingly, it is good, otherwise take it by force, and whoever does not pledge allegiance, behead him and send his head to me" (Ibn A'tham, 1411: 5/10).
From historical texts and Sunni sources, it is evident that the Umayyad dynasty, headed by Yazid, intended to assassinate and martyr Imam Hussain(, and for this purpose, they requested the rulers of Medina and Mecca to kill the Imam(, and ultimately, Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, through deception, trickery, and the disloyalty of the Kufans, brought the Imam( to martyrdom in Karbala.
