Analyzing the Position of the Soft Power of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Defensive Deterrence Hossein Souri 1, Ghasem Ranjbar 2, Mohammad Reza Mohammadi 3 Date of Receipt: 2022/05/15 Date of Acceptance: 2022/08/11 Abstract: Deterrence is a set of actions taken by a state or a group of states so that their potential or actual threats neutralize hostile operations against their national interests or those of their allies, or prevent the escalation of war.
The use of hard power resources in pursuit of deterrence policy is well known to individuals, but the role that soft power can play in the defensive deterrence of the Islamic Republic of Iran has received less attention and consideration.
Dr. Hojatollah Izadi, in his article titled "Foundations of Soft Power in the Islamic Republic of Iran," which was published in issue 41 of the Basij Studies quarterly, considers the sources of power to include the following axes: 1- Shia Islam: The concept of justice, the theory of Imamate, occultation and expectation, ijtihad, martyrdom, taqiyya, the revisiting of enjoining good and forbidding evil, jihad, tawalli and tabarra, and clear historical symbols (the just government of Amir al-Mu'minin (AS), the uprising of Ashura, the martyrdom of all infallible Imams (peace be upon them)) have been the driving factors of the Shia movement in the Islamic Revolution (Henry Latifpour, 2001: 72-89) 2- Religious Authority: The principle of Wilayat al-Faqih (Absolute Guardianship of the Jurist) institutionalized the leadership desired by Imam Khomeini (RA) in the system of the Islamic Republic as the greatest source of soft power of the Islamic Republic.
