This study aimed at investigating socio-economic characteristics influencing the rural youth’s attitudes toward employment in agricultural activities in Semnan province of Iran. It was conducted in a causal relationship method. The statistical society included the rural youth, between 18 to 24 years, living in rural areas of the province (102089 people). The sample size was determined based on Krejcie and Morgan table (384 persons). The method used to access the samples was a stratified random sampling method. The result of multiple regression indicated that interest in agricultural activities, agricultural land area, collaboration with agricultural service centers, willingness to team work, cooperation with rural council, and collaboration with Jihad for Agriculture administration had a positive impact and collaboration with production cooperatives, having technical knowledge and information had a negative impact on the attitudes of the studied people, anticipating some 47.7 percent of the variance of the dependent variable. This study recommended the development of high school agricultural training centers in rural areas, design and implementation of appropriate educational programs such as visits to successful projects and entrepreneurs, design and implementation of participatory programs, appropriate policies and support for young people in rural areas.

Based on the results of the study by Mousayi and Ommani (2010) regarding the factors affecting the attitude of rural youth in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province towards employment in the agricultural sector, the variables of the amount of cultivated agricultural land, social participation, and agricultural income have a positive and significant relationship with the variable of rural youth attitude towards agricultural activities; multiple regression results also showed that the independent variables of the type of exploitation system, familiarity with related organizations, social participation, and the income level of rural youth, in total, explain 49 percent of the changes in the dependent variable.
The independent variables of the research were also: individual characteristics (age, gender, education level, marital status, place of residence and place of birth, number of household members, level of interest in agricultural activities, father's occupation, choosing agriculture as a primary job, possessing required technical information and knowledge, possessing required technical skills, possessing required physical ability, and possessing necessary psychological ability and readiness); social characteristics (level of connection with rural and agricultural organizations and institutions, and inclination towards performing group tasks and collective actions); and economic characteristics (annual income level, area of agricultural and orchard lands, number of sheep and cattle, ownership of tractors and agricultural implements, level of possession of required financial resources, and the level of access and possibility of receiving required loans and credit resources).
