The aim of the present article is to study the factors affecting individuals' political participation by examining their interpersonal relationships using a social network analysis approach. In this study, theories including political efficacy, sense of civic commitment, rational choice, and political preferences were also considered. To this end, 260 questionnaires were administered using the survey method and network analysis among students of Islamic Azad University, Damavand Branch, and in addition to information regarding the respondents, information regarding the members of the social network was also collected. The results obtained indicate that the functional, interactive, and structural characteristics of the network and the social characteristics of the investigated network members influence the voting behavior of the respondents (which is actually considered a visible indicator of individuals' political participation). Additionally, the voting behavior of network members also has a significant relationship with the dependent variable as a predictor variable. Among all the studied indicators, the greatest impact belongs to the political preferences variable. Multivariate regression analysis shows that approximately 37 percent of the changes in voting behavior are explained by the investigated variables. Therefore, in this research, the position of the network approach in explaining voting behavior as a type of political participation was determined, and the results of the research also confirm the role of individual networks in describing and explaining voting behavior directly and through influencing political preferences. Finally, the present research presents a model based on the conceptual model of Westley and Mac.
