The lack of conceptual tools and efficient theories for the proper analysis of the historical relations of urbanization in Iran is among the most important obstacles in the path of the growth of such studies. In this regard, numerous difficulties have prevented a practical and precise definition of the category of 'city' in Iran from being provided so far. In the present article, an attempt has been made to identify and analyze the fundamental components of urban life in the Middle Ages by presenting some basic topics, so that based on them, the necessary grounds for providing a 'definition' of the city in this period are provided; and thus, the question is answered as to what components and criteria the definition of the phenomenon of 'city' in the Middle Ages should be based on?

B-A look at the historical concept of the city: The urban experience of the ancient period The continuous status of urban relations in the ancient period in subsequent eras causes any discussion in this regard to inevitably take place with consideration of that long background; however, since until now the discussion of the definition and concept of the Iranian city in the ancient period has not yielded specific results, it will necessarily, while referring to the results of findings in this direction, attempt to examine the main components of the concept of the city in this era—which are identifiable through the recognition of physical texture, the form of the city, and other matters—so that the background of the emergence and evolution of the components affecting the concept of the city in the Middle Ages can be scrutinized Tehran: Cultural Heritage Organization of Iran.
For this reason, in many cases, the re-reading of the socio-economic and ideological relations of different regions based on the common conceptualization of such terms as reflected in texts faces great difficulties; consequently, to understand the realized reality of urban relations in a historical period, one must first conduct a historical semantics of the words and the main concepts of the research (for example, in a historical definition of the city that meets the needs of researchers is not obtained; and as mentioned, the historical existence of the phenomenon of urbanization in Iran is not carefully examined and analyzed.
