The main foundation of the reverse logistics process is understanding the concept of life cycle management and support, meaning looking at a product or technology throughout its entire consumption life cycle. The concept of the closed-loop supply chain, inherent in the principles of reverse logistics, was first implemented in the electronic equipment industry in the early 1980s as a direct result of component shredding, high-scale integration, and modular design. The process of repairing a product changed from performing on-site repairs to removing and replacing parts, which increased the economic value of returning materials for repair and reallocation, and large companies in this field achieved greater revenues and savings in providing their services by employing reverse logistics.
