The aim of the present research was to investigate the effect of two types of diets (zinc deficiency diet and iron deficiency diet) on the physical growth, memory, learning, and motor activity of young rats. The statistical population of this study consisted of female rats (Albino-Wistar strain) from the Pasteur Institute of Iran. During 28 days (the last third of pregnancy and the lactation period), the mother rats received standard diets, zinc deficiency (>Zn> 0.5 ppm), and iron deficiency (>Fe> 2 ppm). After birth, male offspring of each group were assessed for certain anthropometric indices (height and weight), brain growth, serum zinc and iron concentrations, and memory or learning at three stages: newborn (1 day old), end of weaning (21 days old), and beginning of youth (70 days old). Finally, the motor activity of the rats was measured using the Morris water maze and the Open-field device. Data analysis through one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test at a significance level of p < 0.05 showed that in addition to the important role of zinc and iron elements in optimal physical, brain, memory, and learning growth, these two elements are also effective in the optimal motor performance of young rats. In general, the research results indicate that the element zinc has greater importance than iron in optimal physical, brain, memory, learning, and motor activity growth.
