The aim of this research is to study the effect of speed training and detraining on sICAM-1 levels, a new inflammatory index and predictor of cardiovascular diseases. To this end, 42 male Wistar rats, 3 months old, were randomly divided into 2 experimental groups (n=24 with weight 210±7 g) and control (n=18 with weight 211±3 g). The training program was implemented for 12 weeks, 3 sessions per week, with specific duration and intensity (between 85 to 100 percent and beyond 100 percent VO2max). After 24 training sessions, 6 rats from this group experienced detraining to study the effects of detraining as well. Blood sampling was performed after 14 hours of fasting at different stages of training under similar conditions, and sICAM-1 levels were measured using R&D commercial ELISA kits and a Spectera model Elisa Reader. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, repeated measures, LSD post-hoc test, and independent t-test. The results showed that sICAM-1 levels increased during the first 24 training sessions, which was not significant (P=0.079). However, with continued training up to 36 sessions, a significant increase in sICAM-1 levels was observed (P=0.004). Additionally, it was found that due to the cessation of intense speed training, sICAM-1 levels decreased non-significantly (P=0.152). Overall, based on the obtained results, it can be said that intense speed training leads to a significant increase in sICAM-1, the body's defense mechanism changes during training, and the body is exposed to the risk of atherogenic inflammatory damage.

A portion of the results of this research is dedicated to the effect of 4 weeks of detraining on the inflammatory marker sICAM-1, which was found that in the experimental group that experienced the detraining process from the 24th session until the end of the period (detraining group), sICAM-1 values were accompanied by a non-significant decrease and approached baseline values.
However, the significant inter-group changes between the training and detraining groups with This research is not consistent with previous reports stating that regular endurance activities are accompanied by lower values of the inflammatory marker sICAM-1 (5, 7, 11, 22, 27).
