By using various therapeutic methods, including pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, cognitive therapy, and behavior therapy, help can be provided to the individual suffering from depression.
In any case, pharmacotherapy alone cannot change the psychological and biological status of the depressed individual in a way that is appropriate and worthy toward the desired direction, unless it is accompanied by other therapeutic methods, including behavior therapy and cognitive therapy.
The primary goal in cognitive therapy is to correctly identify the beliefs and attitudes of the depressed individual toward themselves, the environment, and the world of existence, and to provide the grounds for creating new, positive, and productive attitudes and feedbacks in them, so that they may change toward improvement through their effective behaviors.
In the cognitive therapy method, an attempt is made to reduce emotional pressures and other symptoms of depression, in such a way that the therapist tries to correct the client's erroneous interpretations, self-destructive behaviors, and abnormal attitudes, thereby helping the client understand the connection between negative thoughts and negative feelings.
A- Therapeutic Goal: Cognitive restructuring of negative attitude toward the world The individual's attitude is such that they see their problems as very severe and overwhelming, and conversely, consider their successes to be very small and insignificant, feeling that not only do they have no control over the events and their surrounding environment, but they cannot even control their own behaviors.
B- Therapeutic Goal: Cognitive restructuring of the individual's negative view of themselves The client's negative attitude toward themselves may stem from issues such as: feeling self-guilty, feeling shame, anger, and excessive and unrealistic expectations of oneself.
