The subject of this article is the explanation of the background, factors, and strategies for combating and reducing irreligion from the perspective of the Quran. The author defines religion from the perspective of the Quran as a set of beliefs and behaviors centered around a higher being and, after referring to the background of irreligion, has examined the factors of this irreligion in detail with reference to Quranic verses, such as environment, friends and mentors, pressure of violence, perceiving religion as ineffective, doubt and uncertainty, incompatibility with reason, incompatibility with science, poverty, psychosis, religious speakers, carnal desires, religious aggression, and the extensiveness of Sharia.

In the Quranic perspective as well, kindness, self-restraint, and leniency toward people are introduced as factors for attracting them, while strictness and pressure are introduced as factors for avoiding religion: «فبما رحمة من الله لنت لهم و لو كنت فظّاً غلیظ القلب لانفضّوا من حولك فاعف عنهم و استغفر لهم» آل عمران/159 With this view, the Quran calls upon prophets to speak softly with the leaders of disbelief and corruption and restrains them from harsh speech: «فقولا له قولاً لیناً لعلّه یتذكّر أو یخشی» طه/44 And it legislates rulings in such a way that religious people do not get caught in hardship: «لایكلّف الله نفساً إلاّ وسعها».
In the verses of the Quran, some signs of the role of the scholars of the People of the Book in religious avoidance are also mentioned: «یا أیها الذین آمنوا إنّ كثیراً من الأحبار و الرهبان لیأكلون أموال الناس بالباطل و یصدّون عن سبیل الله» توبه/34 A group of scholars of the People of the Book, by mixing their own fabrications with religion, show religion to be incompatible with life and reason for materialistic purposes, thereby creating the grounds for religious avoidance: «فویل للذین یكتبون الكتاب بأیدیهم ثم یقولون هذا من عند الله لیشتروا به ثمناً قلیلاً» بقره/79 «یا أهل الكتاب لاتغلوا فی دینكم» نساء/171 In the Islamic world as well, some spokespersons play such a role; through their ugly behavior, materialism, sin, violence, and their beliefs, they mislead people from the essence of religion and lead them into the valley of religious avoidance; however, the aforementioned verses are not limited to the scholars of the People of the Book, but rather, the spokespersons of Islam are also included in this verse and must refrain from driving people toward religious avoidance.
