Al-Husni said in Al-Muntakhabat: The leaders (Nuqaba) were appointed and the functions of the leadership (Niqaba) were established since ancient times in the Islamic realms, with the aim of researching the truths of lineages and distinguishing the noble masters (Al-Sada al-Ashraf) from the Ahl al-Bayt, the descendants of Imam Ali and Fatima (may Allah be pleased with them both), to protect that pure lineage from intermixing that leads to the application of certain legal rulings to those who do not deserve them.
Abu Ishaq al-Sabi', the head of the Bureau of Correspondence (Diwan al-Insha'), mentioned the form of the appointment to the leadership of the nobles in Baghdad for Al-Sharif al-Radi: This is what the Commander of the Faithful has entrusted to Muhammad bin al-Husayn al-Alawi al-Musawi, son of Muhammad bin Musa bin Ibrahim bin Musa bin Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Husayn bin Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him—when his lineages reached him and the reasons for his appointment were confirmed, and the proofs of his intellect and wisdom appeared, and the signs of his virtue and nobility became clear, and the splendor of the state and the light of the nation, Abu Nasr bin Adud al-Dawla and Taj al-Milla, the master of the Commander of the Faithful, paved the way for him, as the Commander of the Faithful granted him a high position, described him with steady forbearance, praised him for his elevated status, precedence in rank, and qualification for the guardianship of affairs and bearing heavy burdens; and since his desire for him was due to the precedence of his father, al-Husayn, in service, sincere advice, praiseworthy conduct, and witnessed standings, through which his reports became pleasant and his traces became good, and Muhammad was characterized by his noble qualities and following his paths in knowledge, religiosity, piety, protection, chastity, honesty, gallantry, and firmness, with an abundant measure of beautiful virtue and profound etiquette, in his conduct toward his family, in fulfilling his merits over his peers and contemporaries, and in surpassing his relatives and equals.
