Abstract:
Aim: Cognitive variables are important factors in
predicting marriage instability and divorce probability.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of
early maladaptive behavior and irrational beliefs in
predicting marriage instability. Method: This was a
correlational study. The statistical community of the study
consisted of couples who had been referred to the wellbeing
organization of Sirvan city and 200 persons were
selected by accessible method. The research tools
consisted of the Young Schema Questionnaire - short
form, Romans & Debourd Relationship Beliefs Scale and
Marital Instability Scale of Edward and Johnson. We used
simple and multiple regression to analyze data and
examine the hypotheses. Results: The findings indicated
that early maladaptive schemas and irrational beliefs about
relationship predict marriage instability independently and
together. Conclusion: Considering the role of cognitive
factors in predicting marriage instability, these findings
can be used in educational planning for preventing and
decreasing divorce probability and improving couples
relationship.
