Abstract:
A Thematic Analysis of the Tree of Life motive and its Associated Ornaments in the Yakutia School Abstract: During the Seljuk period, the construction of schools was favored by the governors and the people of Anatolia, and this tradition continued during the reign of Ilkhanids, allegiant to Seljuks. What distinguishes the Seljuk-Ilkhanid schools from other ones is the facade. One of the most prominent examples of these schools is the Yakutia School located in the city of Erzurum. The most important motives used in the school's entrance facade are the tree of life relief, double-headed eagle, and two symmetrical lions on the sides of the tree of life. The purpose of the present study is to investigate and analyze the tree of life motive as well as the double-headed eagle and lion, which can be seen as two integral elements alongside the tree of life. This study attempts to explain the importance of the role of the mentioned motives in this building, also identify and introduce one of the lesser-known monuments and the most important decorations used in it. Since one of the most important features of Seljuk-Ilkhanid architecture in Anatoly has been the use of decorative elements in architecture, and especially the decoration of the facade, studying these motives can open up a new opportunity to understand the art of this period and its relation to cultural, social, religious and political issues. The main questions of this research are: What is the concept of these motives? Is this motive related to the function of the building? By which beliefs and rituals can these decorative elements be affected? The results show that the ornamentations used in this school’s facade were formed under the influence of Shamanism and following the Seljuk artistic traditions. The present paper has been done through a descriptive-analytical method as well as a library and field observation method.
