Abstract:
This paper aims to identify the grammatical constructions expressing indefiniteness in Old Persian (OP). Based on the extant data from this stage of Persian language, it will be argued that the indefinite article is an emergent syntactic category in this stage; namely, there is no indication of its grammaticalization before this stage. This occurred by grammaticalization of numeral aiva chr('39')onechr('39') through which it was reanalyzed to chr('39')indefinite articlechr('39') based on metonymic relations which in turn paved the way for its metaphoric extension. This occurred in a specific construction (chr('39')There is only one X, the X is a human beingchr('39')) which resulted in a conceptual shift expressing indefiniteness in OP. It will be clarified that the emergence of the indefinite article in OP for the first time reflects the prior establishment of a determination slot in the prehead of an NP. Such a grammatically established slot has the potential of being filled by the new emergent indefinite article; but only before an NP referring to human beings. To depict this path of development, a usage-based cognitive model, Construction Grammar, is adopted. This study is based on the corpus of OP gathered by Kent (1953). Our investigation illustrates that the token frequency of indefinite article in the total NPs (4130) amounts to 0.5%. This amount is not much high; however, it implies that it is a newly formed grammatical construction in Old Persian.
