Abstract:
After the “Saqifah” event the seed of difference in all the Islamic knowledge even about unity, prophethood, eschatology, and particularly Imamat which guaranteed the survival of Islam, was sown. The dispute over Imamat has ever been the gravest subject between the Fariqain. The verses dealing with Guardianship (welayah) including “…he who sells his soul…” have been the most challenging subject in all periods. The Imamites and many Sunnies emphasize that it was revealed about Imam Ali (a.) on the Night of Shelter while some Sunni groups believe, depending on some apocryphal traditions, that it conforms with other referents. They are unauthentic traditions with regard to the content, text, history, and intellect. The present research deals with the verse by examining the perspectives of the Fariqain’s traditions, negates the misinterpretations, and offers the conclusion that the traditions dealing with the revelation of the verse about Imam Ali (a.) are of the meaningfully recurrent ones and definitely demonstrate the virtue and Divine successorship of Imam Ali (a.) on the Night of Shelter. Therefore, truth should not be mixed with falsehood.
