Abstract:
Language is the most important means of communication between human beings and has always been considered as an important subject. Many thinkers have studied language. Some linguists see language as a meaningful system, while others see it as a set of conventional signs. Social linguist theorists as well as feminist critics, especially postmodern feminists such as Sarah Mills, have theorized about linguistic features in women's work and how it differs from men's work; The notions of language and gender have a noticeable presence in fiction. Because in order to use the exclusive linguistic features of men and women, the writer has to use a language in proportion to the gender of its characters. The present study aims at investigating the female identity at three lexical, syntactic and discursive levels based on the linguistic approach of Sarah Mills in the two novels of “Willful Disregard” by Lena Andersson and “Moon Becomes Full” by Fariba Vafi using analytic-comparative method. Sarah Mills has investigated sexist language at the three levels mentioned above, and has introduced the relevant component of each level as well. In this research, the authors first discuss the theories of the feminist criticism, then the linguistic theory of Sarah Mills and finally the two novels are compared accordingly.
