Abstract:
Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990, under former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, and were able
to easily occupy the oil-rich country in a short period of time. However, Saddam Hussein's move provoked
a strong reaction from the international community, and the United Nations passed several resolutions,
including seven months later, in early 1991, after Saddam Hussein ignored global warnings. An international
coalition led by countries in the region, as well as the United States, launched the first Gulf War and ousted
Saddam Hussein from Kuwait. The present study seeks to answer the question of what action the United
Nations has taken in response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, and how, in the context of the Cold War, the two
powers, the Soviet Union and the United States, were able to share common views on this issue. The present
study has been collected qualitatively and with library documents.
