Introduction: Headache is one of the most prevalent
complaints investigated in the neurological clinics.
When all types of headache are considered, headache
becomes the most common kind of complaints in the
world caused by pain. Stress is a significant factor
that creates and aggravates headache. Hence,
employees of military professions due to
experiencing high levels of stress caused by their
career are more prone to headache. The current study
aimed to investigate the effectiveness of
neurofeedback thrapy on treatment of primary
headaches in military personnel.
Method: The present study was a quasi-experimental
single group with pre-test and post-test. Method of
sampling was convenience sampling. The
independent variable was the neurofeedback
intervention and the dependent variables were
frequency, severity and duration of headache. The
assessment tool was the Blanchard headache diary.
To this end, 15 military personnel with primary
headache were selected. The subjects completed the
headache dairy record form for a week before and
after the intervention as pre-test and post-test. In the
period between pre-test and post-test, the subjects
were treated with neurofeedback over fifteen 30-
minute sessions, three times a week.
Results: The results obtained from the paired t-test
carried out on pre-test and post-test indicated that
neurofeedback treatment significantly decreased the
frequency, severity and duration of headaches in
patients with primary headache.
Discussion: Considering the obtained results and the
dramatic reduce of the headache frequency, severity
and duration, it seems that treatment with
neurofeedback as a behavioral intervention can be
effective in the reduction and treatment of primary
headaches in Military Personnel.
