The purpose of this study was to comparison of the mental skills, self
confidence and interpretation of anxiety in athletes participating in open
versus close skill sports. The population of research consisted of elite
athletes of Tabriz city that had experienced diverse sports for about five
years (131 athletes). 84 open skill athletes and 32 close skill athletes selected
by stratified random sampling (116) and completed the modified CSAI-2
(somatic anxiety, cognitive and self confidence) and OMSAT-3 (three
mental skills: basic, psychosomatic and cognitive). The collected data were
analyzed by SPSS through MANOVA (to compare open and close skill
athletes according to mental skills, intensity and interpretation of anxiety)
and multivariate multiple regression (for the relationship among mental
skills, cognitive, anxiety-self confidence) (Sig= 0/05). The results indicated
that the mean of somatic anxiety intensity was greater in open skill athletes.
In general mental skills: self confidence, imaginary and stress reactions were
the most important indexes which predicted positive interpretation of anxiety
and athletes’ self confidence in performance. Also the relationship among
mental skills, anxiety intensity and self confidence in open and close skill
athletes was different. According to the results in basic skills self confidence
in psychological skill, concentration for open skills and mental practice for
close skills and in psychosomatic skills stress reactions for two groups were
the most important indexes which predicted anxiety and self confidence.
Sport psychologists can use a number of mental skills in order to assist
athletes in interpreting anxiety as facilitative.
