Purpose: The purpose was to survey the effect of practice order with dominant and non-dominant hand on
acquisition, retention and transfer of basketball dribbling skill of the male students at Ferdowsi University.
Method: The subjects were 20 students of General Physical Education (19-24) that did not have any
experiences in basketball and their dominant hand was right. They randomly selected and equally assigned to
two groups. Subjects practiced in the program for 4 weeks, 2 times a week and 45 minutes per session. Group
A practiced with their dominant right hand for the first four sessions and then switched to their left hand for
the second four sessions. Group B practiced in vice versa manner. The subjects were assessed by Slalom-
Dribble-Test in pre test Results showed that there was no significant difference between two groups in
acquisition of dribbling Skill (p=0.053). Movement time has been significantly reduced from pre-test to posttest
(p=0.0001).Results showed better performance of the right hand than the left (p=0.042). Both groups had
shorter dribbling time with the right hand than the left in post-test and retention test. There was no significant
difference between two groups in transfer task (p = 0.16). Conclusion:Results indicate that practice with
dominant and non-dominant limbs in the initial motor learning seems to be important to improve performance
of both limbs and to strengthen bilateral competence of the learners.
