The present paper studies the theme of argumentation- along with its cognitive patterns in the
Iraqi theatrical message- tends to study the idea of argumentation in the theatrical speech in two levels:
the text and the performance. The study is consisted of four chapters: Chapter One entitled ‘The
methodical frame’ has the problem of the study which centers upon the following query: what is
argumentation? And what are its cognitive patters in the address of the Iraqi theatre? The chapter
studies the significance of argumentation as an important untraditional kind of communicative speech
because it carries cognitive argumentative patters. The paper is very beneficial to students and
researchers in the institutes and colleges of fine arts, as well as the individuals working in the theatrical
fields as it helps them recognize the theme of argumentation with its cognitive aspects in the Iraqi
theatrical speech. The year 2015 is the temporal limit of the study; location is Iraq, and the subject is:
the study of argumentation and its cognitive aspects in the in the dramatization of the play, Ya Rab
(Oh! God). The study has procedural definitions for the study terms in the title. Chapter Two (The
theoretical frame) has three sections in addition to the resulted indications of the study. In the first
section, the researcher studies the concept of ‘argumentation’ rhetorically; second section deals with
the aspects of argumentation as used conventionally, while she devotes the third section to the aspects
of argumentation in the global theatrical speech.
The researcher dedicates chapter three to the procedures of the study. She specifies the study
sample, namely the performance of the play Ya Rab written by Ali Abdul Nabi Al Zaidi and directed
by Mohammed Hussein Habeeb. The play is elected purposefully and used as a sample in the study
analysis. The researcher adopts the descriptive method in analyzing the play according to the
requirements of the current study. The researcher concludes the study with a number of findings, and
the references consulted are cited in the end. Also, the researcher supplements the study with an
attachment for the elected sample of the study. The conclusions of the study are listed below:
1. The characters of ‘Moses’ and ‘Mother’ reveal typical concepts attracting the audiences’
attentions. They are just one of the rhetorical aspects of argumentation.
2. The mother’s monologues dominating on the theatrical expose actions of fulfillment related to
everyday argumentation. They are described as actions of clarification, guidance and command.
