Present study explored linguistic taboos in Iranian cinema. The main focus was to identify the functions of taboo words uttered by characters. The gender of the character as well as the scenarists were the other questions of the researchers. Twenty Iranian movies in a twenty-year period—1998 – 2018—shaped the corpus of this sociolinguistic study. The contexts of the data, collected through watching the films and taking notes, were in the form of dialogues. To analyze the data, a revised classification of the framework provided by Wardhaugh (2006) was applied. According to the findings, among Wardhaugh’s classification, attention, provocation, and humiliation are perceived in Iranian cinema, as well. Moreover, four new functions, namely emphasis, catharsis, fear, and affection were also identified in the Iranian culture. The data were submitted to SPSS software. Based on the outcomes, providing catharsis, with occurrence of 49.45%, played the role of the most frequent function. The results also revealed that male characters made the most use of taboo terms in comparison with the females. Female scenarists, however, were the ones who practiced more taboo terms in their plays than the males. Dramatists, scenarists, linguists, and even language teachers can benefit from this study’s outcomes.
