Introduction and Purpose: Given that social anxiety disorder causes detrimental effects on psychological
function and quality of life, it is important to identify the pathophysiology and choose the best treatment for
this disorder. The purpose of this study is a systematic review of the pathophysiology and modern neurotherapy
methods of social anxiety disorder.
Materials and Methods: This study is a systematic review related to pathophysiology and modern methods
of treatment of social anxiety disorder, which was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of systematic
review studies (PRISMA). The data of the present study were done by searching the texts in the Persian and
English research databases such as Noormags, Magiran, PubMed, Scopus, Springer and Google Scholar with
the keywords “Anxiety Disorders”, “Social Anxiety”, “Pathophysiology of social anxiety” and “Modern
treatment methods” (separately and combination with each other) was performed from 1992 to 2020.
Results: Through Systematic search, 37 articles about pathophysiology and modern neurotherapy methods of
social anxiety disorder were found. Studies that have examined the pathophysiology of social anxiety disorder
have focused on genetic and familial factors, environmental factors, drug-related factors and neurological
factors in the formation of this disorder. The most effective modern treatment methods known for this disorder
include Transcranial direct current stimulation, Neurofeedback and Biofeedback and Magnetic
excitation.
Conclusion: In general, due to the fact that this disorder leads to the avoidance of social relationships,
psychologists and psychiatrists are advised to pay attention to subtle diagnostic points in evaluating this
disorder, especially in terms of comorbidity, and in choosing new treatment methods. Act in accordance with
the results of the latest research so that they can make the right and accurate choice in the treatment of social
anxiety disorder.
