Abstract:
Vaght o Saat square is one of the most important historical squares in Iran. Historical background of the location of this square from the early Islamic period, proximity to the Grand Mosque and locating in the inscribed world heritage zone of Yazd, intact and original composition of the square, variety of architectural styles of elements around it from different periods including Ilkhanid, Timurid, Safavid Qajar and Pahlavi, the existence of various water structures and the name of the square, which is attributed to the famous histiric observation, all emphasize the importance and values of this square.
However, a look at the research related to this square shows that so far no valid research has been done on the history and how this square was formed. The main purpose of the present article is to clarify this aspect of this square. In this regard, an attempt has been made by the method of logical reasoning and citing various sources including historical texts, archaeological studies, field research, historical documents including aerial photographs and archival images and reviewing oral sources by asking architects familiar with the square to draw a clear image of the square formation process.
The results show that although in most studies is mentioned that the history of this square dates back to the Ilkhanid period, but what we know as the square and open space of the square of Vaghto Saat is related to the Safavid era and the first element forming the enclosure of the square is the water reservoir of Vaght o Saat in the late Safavid era on the northern side of the square. Other elements and components enclosing the open space of the square were formed in the Qajar and Pahlavi periods.
However, in the open space of the square and around it, there are movable and immovable artifacts from the pre-safavid period, which are: 1) Zarch payab related to the early centuries of Islam 2) Waqfabad payab and Seyed Roknoddin tomb from the Ilkhanid period, 3) The northern mosque of the square from the Timurid period. Also, from the pre-Safavid historical elements of the square, we can mention the bell, which belongs to the fourth century AH.
