Current research, applies critical ethnography as well as Henri Lefebvre’s theory of production of space and studies alienation among people living in urban space of Tehran. Alienation was defined as an instrumental relationship against a relationship for its own sake and ownership against appropriation. Three spaces were selected through a purposeful selection: space of stock market, complex of Khalij Fars Lake and Bamland, Khalazir neighborhood. They were selected as representatives of abstract and concrete spaces as well as Lefebvre’s trialectics of space. The data was gathered through observation, photos, personal and in-depth interviews, previous studies and ethnographies, documentaries, organizational documents, reports and online questionnaires for each space and was categorized interpretively and inductively in a structural, functional and formal analysis. The study shows that alienation with others, self, labor, urban space and everyday-life, is a common experience between all classes and is related to the space order; but has a different meaning in central and marginal spaces and is integrated differently in everyday-life consciousness. Alienation in the relations of production is experienced due to universal traits such as meaninglessness, competitive market, and commodification; but it depends on the specificities of Tehran urban space, if the political and cultural structure is regarded. Diverse forms of everyday-life prevents a collective consciousness and along prohibitions, fears and gaps in the urban space, doesn’t allow a collective effort for de-alienation to form. The moments and differences in everyday life may be liberating on one level of social reality, but unproductive on the next one.
