Finding integrity in an area is closely connected with appreciating it as a coherent whole. Maintaining the tangible and intangible structures of this coherent whole guarantees integrity in a historic area. Thus far, integrity and its significance have been indirectly raised as the key components of conservation frameworks. Even so, no specific procedure has been to date established to evaluate and quantify integrity in historic urban areas in Iran, so the limits of integrity have remained unknown. Of note, the lack of integrity continuity, identified in historic situations, is among the main causes of damage to historic cities. Against this background, the present study aimed to shed light on the basic criteria associated with integrity evaluation in historic urban areas. For this purpose, the initial criteria for integrity evaluation were first developed based on the prevailing conservation frameworks, and thenceforth the initial model was put into practice in an urban quarter, comprising the Sultan Amir Ahmad Neighborhood and its surrounding setting, in the city of Kashan, Iran. Accordingly, the preliminary findings were applied to a real but damaged, historic urban area, and the preferred criteria were elucidated. Along this line, a descriptive-analytical approach was adopted, and historical texts, documents, field studies, as well as historical photos were utilized to gather information. Moreover, there was much attempt to reconstruct the initial model of the given historic urban area with reference to that in the aerial images recorded in 1956, plus the existing information on its uses and people’s work and life in the past. In this way, the initial model for integrity evaluation was created on the analysis of some manuscripts, e.g., the Nairobi Recommendation (1976), Washington Charter (1987), the Declaration of San Antonio (1996), and Valletta Principles (2011). In view of that, the findings provided evidence for the changes and transformations affecting urban macro patterns, urban fabric, buildings and their formal appearance, the relationship between an area and its surrounding setting, functions, spirit of place, place identity, traditional techniques, and cultural traditions of historic urban areas, and how they had shaped integrity.
