It is important to stress the well-established positive functions that green areas perform, ranging from increasing the aesthetic attractiveness of the city at a street and neighbourhood level, providing shelter and shade which saves much energy use in heating or cooling systems, mitigating the urban heat island effect, intercepting and moderating storm water, collecting and filtering pollutants such as particulate matter, allowing wildlife to flourish in urban areas, maintaining a contact with nature and helping residents restore their mental faculties and to reduce stress.
The single biggest challenge is to retro-fit a network of green/blue infrastructure into existing dense cities, yet this is a major need if such cities are to become healthy and attractive places for people to live and work and to maintain a competitive advantage.
However, a green infrastructure is only part of the needs of a living city – it must also be a place where the urban ecology opportunities noted above form an integrated part of a pedestrian-friendly structure which permits citizens to make the most of opportunities for social and economic functions provided by a vibrant street life in the absence of heavy traffic, noise and air pollution."
