Inherent Dignity of Man in the Quran Almighty God, in verse 30 of the noble Surah Al-Baqarah, introduces man as His vicegerent and successor among the beings of existence, and in verse 70 of Surah Al-Isra, refers to him as a "honored" being, saying: «وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِی آدَمَ وَحَمَلْنَاهُمْ فِی الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ وَرَزَقْنَاهُم مِّنَ الطَّیبَاتِ وَفَضَّلْنَاهُمْ عَلَی كَثِیرٍ مِّمَّنْ خَلَقْنَا تَفْضِیلاً» (Al-Isra/70) And indeed, We have honored the children of Adam and carried them on land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.
Allameh Tabataba'i says regarding this: Regardless of the specific dignities and spiritual and mental virtues that God has bestowed upon some humans, this verse encompasses all individuals of mankind, including polytheists, disbelievers, and sinners, and each of the words "karramna" and "faddalna" refers to a category of divine gifts bestowed upon man.
For this reason, the "na" in "karramna" refers to all attributes, and throughout the entire Quran, such explicit statements and allusions regarding the dignity of man exist, just as it says in Surah "Tin": «لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِی أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِیمٍ» and in Surah Al-Anbiya: «فتبارك الله احسن الخالقین» (Sadeqi Tehrani, 1365: 17/273) The Difference Between Takrim and Tafdil in This Verse The Generous God has given man both dignity (karamat) and superiority (fadhilat).
(Javadi, Amoli, 1386: 334) Allameh Tabataba'i says: The noble verse 70 of Surah Al-Isra carries this meaning that God has given superiority to humans over animals and jinn, but this does not include the angels, because they are light-based and non-material beings and are not part of the current system of this world.
