Аннотация:
Legitimacy is the foundation of existence and the source of durability for all political systems. The present article is actually a theoretical prelude to analyzing this issue in the system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The aim of the article is to determine the conceptual scope of legitimacy and discuss the ways to achieve it, the conditions for the emergence of crises within it, and its relationship with the development process. One of the important results of this article is the distinction made between legitimacy and legitimization.

The most important forms of traditional legitimacy are: inheritance (which causes the legitimacy of ruling to be transferred from the ancestor, and the subjects consider themselves the property of the next ruler), gerontocracy (which patriarchal governments benefit from, and its basis is the sanctity of elders and their lordship over the clan members), paternity (from which patrimonial and patriarchal governments derive their legitimacy, based on the father's guardianship over the child, through which the ruler, who is the father of the nation, gains authority over the people who play the role of his children), blood and race (which considers the legitimacy of ruling to stem from a specific tribe with unique race and blood, such as the legitimacy arising from being of Quraysh origin in some Islamic governments), elitism (which attributes legitimacy to professional privileges or social hierarchies, such as various types of istocracies (in which some clerics, some landed aristocrats, or some military leaders hold sovereignty)), divine right (which posits a sacred basis for legitimacy and considers government a divine trust granted to the ruler through a specific method, and many theocracies (religious governments) derive their rightfulness from this source).
Even in advanced industrial countries where a catalactic order governs social relations and traditional moral ties have weakened, many political leaders also resort to traditional and venerable sources of legitimacy, do not consider themselves independent of them, and open a way into the hearts of the people through any trick.
