Abstract:
The present descriptive-analytical study aims to investigate the process of the production of meaning based on the actantial model and the narrative syntagms of Greimas, in addition to analyzing the characters and sequences of the Sacred Night by Ben Jelloun. He introduces the invisible aspects of the text and achieves an image presentation in a text unique in its form and structure. After introducing Greimas’ point of view and explaining the narrative structural analysis, the novel is divided into several sequences. While dealing with actants, the syncretism phenomenon is visible. This phenomenon makes it easier and more tangible for the protagonist to reach his ultimate goal, which is the liberation from the imprisonment of the male body and the realization of a true female identity. The actant is not necessarily a character; it is rather the case of the sender, who is more concerned with concepts and meanings. The change of situations based on the double confrontations in the novel (i.e. from an initially balanced situation to the median unbalanced situation, and ultimately the final balanced situation), is quite perceptible. This analysis is completed by examining the narrative syntagms, being the main factors in the formation of the narrative. The creation of a number of contracts at the beginning of the novel creates a set of contract syntagms leading to the production of performance syntagms based on struggle, revenge, and cunning. The status of the story creates a disjunctional syntagm, from negative to positive syntagms.
