Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders
(DSMIV) considered HIV/AIDs a life threatening and
critical disease which would cause post-traumatic stress
disorders (PTSD). Therefore, the person suffering from
AIDS not only had the symptoms of psychiatric disorders
such as avoidance, inadvertent thought, overstimulation,
stress and depression, but also had recognition problems
such as attention, memory, data processing and so on. This
study aimed at investigating autobiographical memory
performance of those afflicted with HIV/AIDS which is
considered an effective factor in shaping an individual’s
identity and ego and in making an individual’s behaviors
goal-driven. 60 subjects of the study were incorporated in
two groups, 30 individuals afflicted with AIDS and 30
healthy and normal individuals. The two groups were the
same in terms of some characteristics such as gender, age,
marital and socio-economic status. Both groups were
administered the Impact of Event Scale (IES-R), Beck’s
Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck’s Anxiety Inventory
(BDI), Autobiographical Memory Interview (AMI) and
Autobiographical memory Test (AMT). The results
indicated that there were a lot of symptoms of PSTD,
anxiety and depression among the members of the patient
group. The findings also showed that the personal
semantic memory scores were lower in childhood and
early adult stages among HIV/AIDS survivors comparing
with normal control subjects. The findings are discussed in
terms of the role of the self and processes involved in nonspecific
retrieval of autobiographical material.
