"Fluidity of English Grammatical Categories and Special Verbs Dr. Saber Delshad Shahid Beheshti University Tehran Abstract: Every language shapes and classifies reality in its own special way.
First, it throws light on the fl- idity of English grammatical categories through citing exam- ples from verbal phrases such as drop out and a dropout(as a verb and as a noun with different stress patterns), single verbs such as buy or dig(both as a verb and as a noun), and the identification of function through stress pattern such as import and import(as a verb and as a noun with different stress pat- terns).
Sccond, along the lines of fluidity, it singles out certain special English verbs, which have compact meanings and are probably unique to English language .
Two examples of such verbs are as follows: Lynch: which means to kill somebody believed to be guilty of crime without a proper trial stalk: which means to move quietly and slowly towards an animal or person in order to get near without being seen.
English, unlike many other languages , employs the names of certain animals , objects, and body parts and aptly uses them as verbs to display certain characteristics that those animals, objects, and body parts posses.
The following examples display phrasal verbs used mostly as nouns or adjectives.
Interestingly enough, another device that might well fit in with the concept of fluidity is that English language has forged certain words, such as nouns or verbs, which might be absent in many other languages ."
