Cross-cultural studies are characterized as a comparative tendency in various fields of cultural analysis. Metadiscourse markers are composed of several textual elements conveying meanings other than those that are primarily referential. Mainly, based on Hyland and TSE's (2004) model of academic metadiscourse as instrument, this thesis aimed to investigate the similarities and differences of interactive and interactional discourse resources between two national and international groups in the preface sections of applied linguistic books. Totally, 40 English applied linguistic books (20 international samples, and 20 local samples), were selected to be worked on their preface sections in this thesis. Data collection method was documentary. One-way ANOVA test revealed there was statistically significant difference in using interactive and interactional Metadiscourse markers in international and local applied English linguistics books. Overall, 10 types of Metadiscourse markers were used in international and local English applied linguistic books. The actual difference in mean scores between the groups was quite large, indicating that local writers tended to use one of interactive Metadiscourse (Transitions) up to 1.33 times more than international English writers of applied English linguistic books. The effect size, calculated using eta squared, was 0.2. Additionally, results showed that either international or local applied English linguistic books benefited from similar approach toward using more interactive Metadiscourse than interactional Metadiscourse in their works. It is recommended that a closer look at the less frequently used Metadiscourse like self-mentions, engagement markers, and attitude markers as well as paying attention to the cases of misuse of these markers can be helpful in maximizing their variety of use, and thus developing better English books.
