"خلق صحنههای ملموس به نظر نورمن پیریزی ساختمان نمایشنامه کاری بسیار دشوار و پیچیده است ولی اگر نویسنده محیط و صحنهای را که برای نمایشنامهاش انتخاب میکند خوب بشناسد،کار خودش را آسانتر کرده است،چرا که در این حالت میداند اگر شخصیتهایش با وضعیتی مشابه آنچه که در صحنهء نمایشنامهاش روی میدهد،روبرو شوند چه رفتاری از خود بروز میدهند،چطور حرف میزنند،و همین نکته باعث میشود که نمایشنامه طبیعیتر از کار دربیاید و نویسنده هم راحتتر آن را بنویسد.
مثلا اگر قبلا با اتفاق بسیار ترسناکی روبرو شده یا ضمن حادثهای صدمه دیده باشید،ده سال باید بگذرد تابتوانید اعتراف کنید که صدمه دیده یا ترسیدهاید،و اما آنچه که شما از واقعهای که ده سال پیش موجب ترسیدن یا صدمه دیدن شما شده،به یاد میآورید،خیلی مهم است،و دلیل این هم که شما آن وقایع را به گونهای روشن و ملموس به خاطر میآورید میآورید این است که ذهن شما هنوز دارد به نحوی روی آن حوادث کار میکند.
بینندگان در طول اجرای نمایش دائم از خود میپرسند که چرا جسی میخواهد خودکشی کند؟» نورمن معتقد است که در هر نمایشنامه باید چیزی بسیار جدی،در مخاطره باشد،یا عاقبت چیز بسیار مهمی نامعلوم باشد وگرنه تماشاگران فکر میکنند که آنها را مدت دو ساعت در سالن تئاتر زندانی کردهاند،و نتیجتا عصبانی خواهند شد.
به گمان نورمن باید بین نمایشنامهء مکتوب و نحوهء اجرای صحنهای آن فرق گذاشت،به همین دلیل هم او به نویسندگان پیشنهاد میکند که اگر قرار است نمایشنامه در شهرستان اجرا شود بهتر است پس از آنکه نمایشنامه را یکبار از ابتدا تا انتها خواندند،و به دیدن اجرای آن نیز رفتند، بار دیگر نیز آن را بخوانند تا به کمبودها و نقایص کار خود پی ببرند."
