In the Qur'an neither the word al-mu'jizah is used for " miracle " nor any other derivative from, the same root.
Our business ought to beto classify the arguments brought forward in favour of the thesis that the Qur'an is supernatural.
\Ve have alreadv seen that in the Qur'an the claim of supernaturalism is made in answer to those who· did not believe in the prophethood of Muhammad, The Mutakal• lim also begins his arguments at the same point.
" To the same category belongs the Hadith, already mentioned, in which the Prophet is said to have declared that the· Qur'an is the only sign '(Ayah) he has received.
n. 7 It is also quite evident that the easiest and the most convincing way of refuting the claim of Muhammad would ~ave been to s!1ow that others too_ could coi_npose something like the Qur'an and that there was nothing supernatural· , in it.
So the only sure way of proving the miracle of the Qur'an is to estab• lish that the Arabs did not 'produce the like of it or, in other words, that· they were deterred by God from doing this.
In the life-time of the Prophet there appeared certain persons who either claimed· prophethood for themselves or tried to produce something like the Qur'an.
. · Against Ibnu'l-Muqaffa' there is a more seriouscharge: that he wrote a book against Islam and criticised especially the Qur'a.
One of the arguments in favour of the prophethood · of Muhammad_ was, naturally, the miracle of the Qur'a.
