Man, as a bio-psycho-social phenomenon, is in permanent interaction with the environment. Environmental
psychology is a science that studies the interactions and communication of humans with the external
environment and investigates the relationships between humans and the environment. Humans beings' evolved
and extremely sophisticated brain paves the way for their socialization and this socialization emanates from
humans' thinking and complex mental structures, while other social animals live in extremely stable and
instinctive environments. This is why urbanization is specific to humans and makes a fundamental distinction
between human beings and other social organisms. "Urban planning" makes no sense for social animals colonies,
whereas "lack of urban planning" is indicative of destruction for human cities. Cities should meet human
needs and have adequate means and capacity for human flourishing. Humans should be able to satisfy their biopsycho-
social needs in cities and change their negative emotions into creative and constructive behaviors. This is
why urban planning needs profound knowledge of human needs and psychology as an undeniable necessity in
this type of planning. In this study, we first review the history of environmental psychology and the needs and
dimensions of this modern science and then provide strategies in order to better use this knowledge in the urban
architecture and planning.
