Background: Aging is a process that causes fundamental changes in various systems of the body and their degeneration. Such changes lead to a severe reduction in motor and especially cognitive functions in the elderly. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of training Schedule and attentional focus on executive functions in the elderly.
Method: The method of the present study was quasi-experimental with pretest-posttest design with retention test. A total of 60 elderly people with an age range of 60 to 80 years were selected by voluntary sampling and self-determination method and randomly were allocated in four experimental groups (variable training + external attention, variable training + internal attention, constant training + external attention and constant training + internal attention). The instrument used in this study was a dart designed on the wall for training, Stroop and the Wisconsin test to evaluate executive functions. The training intervention were consisted of 300 darts attempts in 10 sessions (three blocks of 10 attempts per session) according to the constant and variable training conditions. Executive function data were also recorded in two stages: pre-test and post-dart training.
Results: The results showed that among the research groups, the combined group of external focus + variable training created a greater improvement in the executive functions of the elderly.
Conclusion: In general, the use of external focus instructions along with variable training is recommended as a useful method in the executive functions of the elderly.
