The flexibility and mobility of soft tissues around the joints are important
factors in preventing soft tissues injury/ re-injury. The aim of this study was
to compare the effect of dynamic and two different methods of PNF
stretching techniques on flexibility of hamstring muscles group and lumbar
lordosis degree in male students. 90 male students of management faculty of
Tehran University with age ranged between 20- 25 years old with shortness
in hamstring muscles and without any history of surgery through simple non-
probability sampling after signing the consent fore were selected and
randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups (30 subjects in each group) (dynamic
group have mean age 22+1.3 years old, stretching after post isometric
relaxation (PIR) have mean age 22+3.7 years old and stretching based on
reciprocal inhibition principle (RI) have mean age 23%2.2 years old).
Subjects don’t use any drugs during the study period. Stretching protocol
was carried out for 8weeks, 4 times per week, and lasting 2 min on each
session. Hamstring flexibility and knee active and passive rang of motion
and lumbar lordosis (degrees) were measured using goniometer and flexible
ruler respectively (before and after each season). One-way ANOVA with
repeated measure and Tukey post hoc tests were used for statistical analysis
(p=0.05). In all of the three stretching methods the flexibility of the
hamstring muscles, knee active and passive range of motion and lumbar
lordosis after 8 week stretching program significantly improved. The results
showed that there are any statistical significant differences in the effect of
different stretching methods on hamstring muscles flexibility and somewhat
the acquiring effects was equal. Therefore we concluded that all of the three
stretching methods have same effect on increasing hamstring muscles
flexibility.
