"میتوان پذیرفت که میان فهم یک مسلمان با پیروان سایر ادیان،در مورد«سنت»اختلاف وجود داشته باشد و فرضا مسلمان چیزی را سنت بداند که مسیحی به آن باور نداشته باشد و یا بالعکس و حتی در میان خود مسلمین نیز در فهم اختلافنظر وجود داشته باشد-چنانکه دارد-اما بههرحال بحث ما فارغ از این اختلافات،معطوف و متوجه به سوی خود سنت است.
با ارائه همین چند سطر،در پاسخ به پرسش فوق،ممکن است خود را متقاعد سازیم که به کنه«سنت»رسیدهایم و با طرح این مدعا که«سنت،فعل و قول و تقریر محمد(ص) است»،به سیرت و طریقت ایشان وقوف یافتهایم.
انسانی که به عنوان غایت این«قول و فعل»بروز میکند و نقاب از چهره برمیگیرد،کدام انسان است؟سنت پیامبر اکرم(قول و فعل و تقریر ایشان)معرف کدام انسان است و«الگوی»چه انسانی است؟اینکه قرآن کریم میفرماید: «لقد کان لکم فی رسول الله اسوه حسنه لمن کان یرجو الله و الیوم الاخر و ذکر الله کثیرا» (احزاب/ 21)از«اسوه»بودن رسول الله چه اراده میکند؟ بنابراین همانطور که ملاحظه میشود،پرسش از «سنت»به پرسش از«اسوه»میانجامد.
این نکته پنهان و غامضی نیست و برای رویت و ملاحظه آن(که محمد(ص)آموزگار«اخلاص»است و اسوه حسنه «فنا»کافی است که در آیات قرآن و در سیره آن حضرت تامل شود.
ممکن است گفته شود:سنت حضرت پیامبر(ص)در طول تاریخ هزار و چند ساله اسلامی،ساری و جاری بوده است و امروزه بیش از یک میلیارد مسلمان،حامی و مدافع همین شریعتاند و پیرو همان طریقت.
شاید بیجا نگفته باشیم،اگر اذعان کنیم که: امروزه-و در عصر حاضر-ما مسلمانان به جهت دور شدن از سنت سنیه محمد(ص)که همان اسوه حسنه اوست،هویت خود را از دست دادهایم."
