من فکر میکنم که این مضمون از همان شروع داستان در آثار شما ظاهر میشود.
سؤال دیگری که شما در این کتاب مطرح کردهاید، این است«قهرمان کیست؟» من این داستان را برای آن نوشتم تا نشان بدهم چه احساسی در مورد قهرمانپرستی دارم،انگیزهء شکل گرفتن این داستان دو چیز بود،پنجامین سالگرد Day - D (روز حملهء نیروهای متفقین به فرانسه در 6 ژوئن سال 1944)که یادآور سالهای جنگ است و آگهیهایی که روزنامهء محلی دربارهء مرگ زنان و مردانی که در جنگ جهانی دوم جنگیدند،چاپ کرده بود.
ولی من فکر میکنم که کتابهایم به دلیل تصویرکردن چیزی که در دنیای امروز میگذرد،ایجاد وحشت میکنند و امروز،بخش اعظمی از زندگی ما را داستانهای وحشتانگیز تشکیل میدهند،من شبها اخبار ساعت 11 را نمیبینم،چون دلم نمیخواهد با چنان داستانهایی را به رختخواب بروم.
اما بعد از این که آن را تمام کردم،از خودم پرسیدم«آیا این واقعا مؤثر است؟آیا بچهها فکر نمیکنند که مسائل در عالم واقع به این شکل پیش نمیآیند؟»با این حال نامههای فوق العادهای دربارهء این داستان به دستم رسیده است."
