در دههء 1920، جان برادسواتسون (John Bradus Watson) در کتاب معروفی در حوزهء فرزندپروری بهنام « مراقبت روانشناختی طفل و کودک psychological care of infant and child » در مورد خطرات عشق زیادی مادرانه هشدار داد و کتاب خود را به اولین مادری تقدیم کرد که فرزند خوشبختی را پرورش میدهد.
وابستگی کودک به مادر خود صرفا در فراهم آوردن غذا و پناهگاه برای فرزند معنا پیداکرد و فرزند در این نگاه مادر خود را با تغذیه و مجاورت فیزیکی شناسایی کرد.
اما « بالبی (Bowlby) » مشاهده کرد که حتی کودکانی که تمام نیازهای غذایی آنان کاملا مورد توجه قرار گرفته بود و محروم از دلبستگی نسبت یک شخصیت بودند (مانند کودکانی که در طول جنگ جهانی دوم در نهادهای مختلف اجتماعی نگهداری میشدند) از شخصیت سالمی برخوردار نبودند و رشد آنها با اختلالات مختلف روحی توأم بود.
مطالعات « انیزورث و بالبی » نشان داد که ارتباط عاطفی میان فرزندان و سرپرستان آنها نقش فوقالعادهء مهمی را در سلامت روان کودک ایفامیکرد.
