چکیده:
Triathlon is one of the most exciting and popular sports. Since triathlon includes activities such as swimming, cycling, and running, many risk factors cause injuries in athletes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of injuries in triathlon athletes. To this end, information related to the injuries of the past year of 60 elite triathletes participating in the national championships (Bushehr) was collected through an injury report form and analyzed using the Chi-square test. A total of 123 injuries were reported (about 2 injuries per year for each athlete). Compared to the upper body, a larger number of injuries occurred in the lower body (78 percent). Shin (28 percent), shoulder (22 percent), knee (21 percent), and ankle (11 percent) accounted for the highest number of injuries (P<0.05 and 2=42.67). The most common types of injuries were shin splints (26 percent), shoulder pain (22 percent), knee pain (15 percent), and abrasions and bruises (14 percent) (P<0.05 and 2=13.43). Overuse (30 percent) was the most important cause of injuries (P<0.05 and 2=35.95), followed by changing running location (19 percent), inappropriate shoes (15 percent), and insufficient warm-up (13 percent), which were other main causes of injuries. Non-contact injuries (83 percent) were significantly more frequent than contact injuries (17 percent) (P<0.05 and 2=53.34). Injuries that occurred during training (76 percent) were more frequent than injuries that occurred during competition (24 percent) (P<0.05 and 2=32.26). Injuries that occurred during the running phase (51 percent) were more frequent than injuries that occurred during the cycling phase (27 percent) and swimming (22 percent) (P<0.05 and 2=18.14). In terms of injury severity, most injuries were mild (85 percent) (P<0.05 and 2=61.53). Injuries on the right side (64 percent) were significantly more frequent than injuries on the left side (P<0.05 and 2=9.95). The findings of this study indicate that most injuries occurred in the lower body and during the running phase, and the shin and shoulder were the most susceptible areas for injury in triathlon athletes, and the main reason for injuries was overuse. Therefore, it is recommended that medical staff, trainers, athletes, and coaches pay attention to the aforementioned points and also consider these points in injury prevention programs.

In this study, the number of injuries that occurred during training (76 percent) was more than the number of injuries that occurred during competition (24 percent), which could be due to various reasons such as overuse, inappropriate shoes, changing the running location, or insufficient warm-up.
