The role of inflammatory biomarkers of cardiovascular diseases in diabetic individuals following exercise training is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of pro-inflammatory resistin and CRP following aerobic and resistance exercise in patients with type 2 diabetes. Forty women with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to aerobic exercise (14 individuals), resistance exercise (13 individuals), and control (13 individuals) groups. The aerobic group (performed aerobic exercise for 20-50 minutes per session at an intensity of 50-70% of maximum heart rate), the resistance group (performed resistance exercise in 3 sets of 10 repetitions at an intensity of 40-60% of one repetition maximum) performed three sessions per week for twelve weeks. The control group did not exercise during this period. Blood samples were collected to examine the studied variables at pre- and post-test stages. Statistical analysis of the results was performed using SPSS software. According to the results, resistin and CRP increased and decreased, respectively, in the two exercise groups. Weight, BMI, body fat percentage, waist-to-hip ratio decreased only in the aerobic group, insulin resistance only in the resistance group, and glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels decreased in both exercise groups (P≤0.05). Resistin had a significant inverse correlation with CRP only in the post-test of the resistance group (P≤0.05). Considering the findings, it does not seem that resistin causes insulin resistance and is a predictor of cardiovascular diseases.

Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the role of pro-inflammatory resistin and CRP following aerobic and resistance exercise in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Some studies, reporting the association of aerobic and resistance training with reduced levels of insulin resistance, fat and CRP, showed that physical activity and weight loss can have beneficial effects on inflammatory status and control of type 2 diabetes, but the results of some other studies indicate the lack of this association (20).
Therefore, the present study was conducted with the general aim of investigating the role of the pro-inflammatory resistin and CRP following 12 weeks of aerobic and resistance exercise in obese postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes.
Regarding comparing the effect of these two types of exercise on serum resistin levels, only one study has been conducted in which serum levels of this index showed no significant change in both aerobic and resistance groups.
