The emergence and development of cultural studies theories have created a transformation in the view of popular culture and its audiences. The new perspective considers audiences not as passive victims and consumers, but as active elements with the power to create meaning at the moment of consumption. In this article, within the framework of cultural studies theories and using a qualitative research approach and interview and observation techniques, the audience of the film 'Expelled 2', as the best-selling product of Iranian popular cinema, has been studied. To study the audience, the film was watched 9 times in cinema halls in different parts of Tehran during its screening, and their behavior during the film was observed and recorded. In addition, some time after the end of the cinematic screening, qualitative interviews were conducted with a number of the film's viewers. This collection of conversations and observations identified some factors as reasons for the film's high sales.

These reasons that emerged from the analysis of interviews and observations are: A) The film’s history (the film’s general history, the film’s comedy history); B) Presenting a new perspective on the Sacred Defense; C) Extensive advertising; D) The possibility of different and free interpretations by the audience; E) Creating a fun atmosphere in cinemas for group viewing; F) The possibility of interaction and participation in the process of watching the film in cinemas.
Observing the behavior of audiences in several cinemas showed that this scene of the film was met with laughter from a few people while the majority of the hall remained silent, even though there were no comedic elements to laugh at.
Conclusion In this article, using the approach of cultural studies and the collection of theories of this school regarding the audience, the viewers of the popular film ‘Expelled 2’ in Iran were analyzed.
Interviews with some viewers of ‘Expelled 2’ and observing the behavior of others in cinemas also showed that the audience of this film had different readings of the messages in some cases.
